In an article published in The Atlantic, researchers found that “6-year-old girls already have gendered beliefs about intelligence.”
Psychologist Lin Bian from the University of Illinois conducted a study of 240 children, aged 5 to 7, to see which adult – male or female – they thought were “smarter.” The results were significant.
Among 5-year-olds, both boys and girls associated brilliance with their own gender. However, those aged 6 to 7, only boys still stuck with that view.
As a Montessori preschool in Virginia, we at Maple Lawn Montessori believe that children, both boys and girls, should be encouraged to speak their minds and embrace their individual passions.
So, to answer the question of whether girls should pursue STEM education? Absolutely! Along with whatever else she wants to experiment with.
Develop your little girl’s imagination, confidence, and curiosity with the help of a reliable Montessori School, like ourselves! Our programs are all designed for teamwork and cooperation between students as we believe that everyone has their own special abilities; no one is above the other.
We try to integrate this philosophy into play and other activities as much as we can until our students are old enough to decide for themselves.
